Herbs Quality Control

IVF Herbal Support uses the highest quality herbs to ensure the best possible results. All our herbs are manufactured by one of the most established and respected manufacturers of concentrated Chinese herbs and are produced according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) regulations .

The following is  quoted from our manufacturer and supplier KPC Products  Inc :

"KPC Products, Inc. is the U.S. office for Kaiser Pharmaceutical Co.(KP) in Taiwan, which manufactures premium Chinese herbs, herbal extracts, and herbal preparations. KP is one of the most established and respected producers of concentrated Chinese herbs in all of Asia. Modern scientific processing methods and rigorous quality control set KPC Herbs apart from all other sources of Chinese herbs.

KPC’s top priority is ensuring the safety of our products. Before they have reached your hands, KPC’s products have gone through the TCM industry’s most rigorous testing standards and inspection processes. Our herbs pass multiple tests for heavy metals, pesticide, sulfur dioxide, aflatoxins and aristolochic acid. These tests are integrated throughout our manufacturing process and each batch comes with a certificate of analysis (CoA) verifying their excellence. Our manufacturing plant, KP, sets a golden quality standard for our herbs by selecting the strictest criteria from each of the differing import standards of the US, Singapore, the European Union and Japan. KPC’s products can confidently pass the most stringent standards of any country, making our herbs truly world-class.

KPC’s products represent a combination of over a century of traditional expertise in the selection and preparation of herbs matched with a quality control system at the forefront of scientific research and development in herbs.

Chinese herbal authentication is the determination of the correct origin, species and an assessment of the quality of Chinese herbs. Its intent is to prevent the use of mistakenly identified herbs or the substitute of imitation products. A typical authentication method of Chinese herbs follows the standards of TCM dictionaries as well as each country’s particular standards for quality, inspection methods and performed with technology specified for detection.

When raw materials come into KP, they go through the following authentication steps:

1.  Appearance: Experts determine species by the herb’s exterior characteristics: color, size, scent and texture.

2.  Microscopic identification: Laboratories use a microscope to determine the herb by its unique characteristics observable only under magnification: the grain of cross-sections of the herb, the graininess of its powder, its cell shape and its behavior under chemical dissociation.

3.  Physical /chemical identification: Laboratories determine species by its unique characteristics under a battery of chemical and physical tests: appearance under fluorescent light, performance under distillation, color chromatography, spectrometric analysis, lost weight on drying, ash content, percent of insoluble ash under liquid, the amount of extracted water and diluted alcohol extract.

4.  Presently, the entire world accepts the authenticity of chemical fingerprint QC methods. Chemical fingerprinting does not seek to identify the exact chemical structure from analysis, but rather seeks identical matches of each batch of the same herb to a laboratory standard.

The following analytical technologies have been employed to obtain chemical fingerprints:

Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC), High-performance liquid chromatography, Gas-liquid chromatography. Since the origin of Chinese herbs is quite complex, the composition of the herbs is even more complex; it is currently impossible to determine the make-up of each herb. But, in the future, KP expects the application of chemical fingerprinting to play an important role in the TCM.

In order to guarantee the efficacy and quality of each herb, KP employs expertise both in traditional methods of inspection of an herb’s exterior surface, color, grain etc., as well as analytical methods made possible by state-of-the-art modern advancements in science. We perform systematic comparisons of the Chinese herbal ingredients and evaluate the quality of each herb to ensure their efficacy. With our available resources, KP is moving towards internationalizing its business, and vigorously promoting the safety of TCM herbs. With the modernization and globalization of TCM, we are building an unparalleled integrated quality control system, strictly enforced from the starting ingredients to the finished products.

Quality:

KP established the Biotechnology Center and instituted Production Identification Protocols to ensure authenticity and efficacy of the herbs. To ascertain the safety and identification of species, all raw materials must undergo stringent QA inspections and screening.

KP tests each batch of every product to ensure safety, potency and consistency. Standard in-house laboratory procedures include microscopic examination, microbiological assay, gas chromatography,(GC), thin-layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and UV-visible spectrophotometry (UV/Vis). The company also engages in numerous research projects, clinical trials and implementation of new technologies such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and nanotechnology.

Innovation:

The KP Biotechnology Center focuses on development of new products, production methods and technology to further satisfy the needs of the ever changing market and to offer further alternatives to TCM practitioners and nutraceutical industries.”

For thousands of years, herbs have been cultivated and used for their therapeutic properties in Far Eastern societies. However, over the last two centuries, industrialization has dramatically changed the natural environment and people’s traditional social practices surrounding the cultivation of herbs. Challenged with industrial waste released into our air and streams and farmers who use pesticides to ensure bountiful crop yields, herb producers now must confront the presence of heavy metals and chemicals in their crops.
